We love vitamin B6

I feel I should add here that we don't use crappy supermarket supplements. We get proper Kirkman labs B6 (and others), it has absolutely no nasties in it.

Junior is on 250mg, tolerates it well and is improving all the time - I guess we could increase it more, but we feel this is fairly optimal. Although we are a bit hesitant about introducing anything new, we are hoping to bring in a new supplement.

It is either going to be Immunocal, an L-carnetine product (better than the tablet we tried before) or one of the anti-virals such as Valtrex. We await feedback from other parents before we dive in with this.

Little boy is just doing so well, we are both high as a kite with optimism - can we dare to have that feeling. God I hope so!

A cure for child autism?

Every parent wants to see that if they have an autistic child. There's no doubt that what we are doing for junior is making a big difference. Sceptics would argue, 'how do you know he wouldn't have done this anyway'. Yeah right! What the hell do they know.

I do know this, giving a supplement and seeing an immediate positive effect, is extremely heartening, a massive indicator that you are doing something right and inconclusive proof that there is a 'cure' out there.

Autistic children have a toxic burden - anything and everything a parent can do to reduce that is vital.

Jamie is now on 200mg a day and thriving. He is using really good language and is interacting really well with us. He is still having the 'weird' behaviour that sets him apart, but it is slowly diminishing.

A fluke of a breakthrough!!

I gave Jamie an extra B6 on a couple of successive evenings. Mainly because it wasn't ticked off on the morning supplements chart we keep.

BUT...what an affect! Jamie's language just improved almost immediately. So guess what, we started giving more B6. The research suggests that it has no adverse effect, and most autistic children need huge quantities of it. Jamie is now on 3 a day 150mg total.

It certainly seems to be having a positive influence on his behaviour at school, as we are getting good reports back.

Chelation continuing

Update on the chelation. We are continuing with weekly frequent dose of 4hrs 25mg DMSA. Jamie has good days at school, particularly on the Monday. We can deduce from this that it has a calming affect, and is starting to make a difference to his functions.

Over a period of time, once the body has removed the heavy metal burden, the brain releases some of its toxic burden into the bloodstream, across the blood brain barrier. Though we have been told that ALA does this, it also can carry it the wrong way. This is what we think happened when we brought it in last year. As a result, we are more than wary about re-introducing it.

Feedback from other parents suggests that if we restart ALA, we give very small doses, such as 5mg. We'll see how it goes.

A quiet Christmas

Well Christmas came and went. We had one of those low key non family ones, which for once was just what we needed. We were able to give Jamie lots of attention.

He had a lovely Christmas day opening tons of presents. Most of them went down very well, a few are gathering dust already!

Behaviour wise, Jamie is not really making solid progress. Good days and bad, very engrossed in computer and dvd play, just a lot of zoning out. We do our best to keep him occupied, but sometimes wejust need to rest.

We've stopped the Nyastatin, as we feel his yeast at least is well under control. Another course of Threelac is more than adequate, and the additives in standard pharmaceutical products are pretty horrid!

Here comes Christmas

Anybody who has a child with autism possibly dreads school holidays. Stress levels go through the roof and respite is practically zero. I guess I am a little nervous about this Christmas as Jamie is a real handful to look after and needs constant supervision.
A few things to report that cheer us up a bit. Lion King chanting has dropped (the obsession with the rising sun triggering it hasn't!). Hand inspection is not an issue now. Weekly swimming, and Jamie is now drinking less water. I immediately take him out of the pool to go home, and from that point he stops doing it. Good boy.
We've started stockpiling presents for him and are staggered by the generosity of friends and family. He is going to be one lucky little boy on Christmas day. He is definitely aware of pending Christmas and seems to know what it represents - fun days with us and lots of goodies. Oh well, that's kind of normal for a kid isn't it!
