Thu Aug 21: Here Comes the Judge
All rise for the honorable Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The only female judge on the most powerful court in the land is coming to Santa Fe to have a chat with the Chief Judge of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Robert Henry. Who knows what they'll talk about (perhaps it'll be a detailed discussion of the unlikely rise of Miley Cyrus?) but seeing the second woman ever to sit on the Supreme Court is a rare opportunity. This year's Hyperfest is bringing us Sarah VonderHaar, a former contestant on "America's Next Top Model." Who knew that in addition to being modely, she would also release an album of indie-pop rock titled Are You Listening Now? And, soon, she'll drop a music video for "Got Sunshine," a song that "describes how to deal with the troubled world we live in by staying optimistic and reminding yourself of all the wonderful things we have in our lives," she says. From the mouths of babes ... . She'll be starting up the Hyperfest party at Launchpad tonight at 8 p.m. and will be followed by See What Happens, local hero Soular, The Cringe and Peekaboo Theory. At least that's what the folks at the Endorphin Power Company are hoping. Endorphin houses many people in need of a safe and substance-free haven to overcome addiction. Tonight's fundraiser at Endorphin (509 Cardeñas SE) features music, good foods to gorge on, local art to gaze at and slammin' poetry. Opening night begins at 7 p.m. and features seven local artists. Nels Andrews is a New Yorker by way of New Mexico, by way of Alaska, by way of California, by way of driftersville. Tonight he steps off that boxcar and finds himself back in Albuquerque, staging the release of his newest collection of subtly mesmerizing Americana ditties, Off Track Betting. Performing along with Andrews is special guest Dameon Lee (of The Lowlights) at The Cooperage (7220 Lomas NE), so have a steak while you're at it. The Alibi's own Benjamin Radford, supernatural investigator extraordinaire, has given us mortals the power of gods with his board game, Playing God. The game pits major religious icons against each other in an all out brawl to rule the world, and even gives enthusiasts the opportunity to make new deities with super godlike powers.
