Thu Sep 4: Zozo Goes Down
For the past few weeks, hundreds of volunteers have worked hundreds of hours to build a 40-foot Zozobra puppet. Their work goes up in flames for the 84th time tonight at Fort Marcy Park in Santa Fe as part of Santa Fe Fiestas. The doors open at 2 p.m., music starts at 3 p.m., the fiery display ending with a burning pile of puppet starts at dusk. Tickets are $5 in advance or $10 day of the show. For ticket locations and info, visit zozobra.com. Burn, baby. (AD)

Fri Sep 5: A State Affair
The New Mexico State Fair has been our supplier of cotton candy, turkey legs, slushies, roasted corn and a number of insanely fast rides to help us make room in our bellies for more candy-coated peanuts since 1938. Maybe "The Zipper" hasn't been around that long, but our own State Fair is celebrating its 70th birthday this year, and organizers are touting it as "a fair to remember." The carnival-riding, bronco-buckin', face-stuffin', art-displayin' fun starts today and continues through Sept. 21. Visit exponm.com for full details, including the lineup of this year's local and national music acts. (AD)

Fri Sep 5: High-Octane History
Five-hundred years in 100 minutes. It's history as you wish your high school American Studies teacher had done it. The Complete History of America (abridged)--the Declaration of Independence, the Boston Tea Party, Abraham Lincoln and beyond--is performed by three men with lots and lots of wigs. Ryan Jason Cook, Rusty Rutherford and Kelly O'Keefe team up with director Susan Erickson for this lightning-quick evening of historical hysterics opening tonight at the Vortex Theatre (2004 1/2 Central SE). The show runs every Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m. through Sept. 28. Tickets are $12, except this Sunday, Sept. 7, which is pay-what-you-will. Call 247-8600 for your reservations. (AD)

Fri Sep 5: Touchy Art
Aaron Harrington insists you touch his art. He hasn't created scratch-n-sniff stickers or furry portraits. He deals in interactive sculptures built for human contact, both visual and physical. Get all touchy on his handiwork at Carnival of Lost Symbols at Warehouse 21's Flying Cow Gallery (1614 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe). The opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. is one of the first in W21's new railyard space. Scope out more info at warehouse21.org or call (505) 989-4423. (AD)

Sat Sep 6: Fixies are a Fixture
They say you can tell a male fixie rider by his short-brimmed cap and beard. But the real commonality is a love for lighter, cheaper bikes without a free wheel (when the wheels are turning, the pedals are moving--no leg-resting coast option on these puppies). Fixed-gear culture is spinning everywhere, and Albuquerque's just another spoke in the wheel. Locals Sau Hsu and Dave Salinas organized a race--not officially sanctioned by any organization, just for fun. There's no fee. Meet other fixie or single-gear enthusiasts at the corner of Seventh Street and Silver at 3 p.m. today. Bring hydration. (MD)
