Thu Aug 14: Carrots and Fish Sticks
You've narrowed it down to the evening's fish specials--there's Chilean sea bass or a wild Alaskan salmon dish. Both are meaty and succulent, but only one is ecologically friendly. The stick: Irresponsible seafood harvesting (as in the case of Chilean sea bass) leads to overfishing, habitat damage and an ugly phenomenon called "bycatch." That's when creatures like turtles and dolphins are unintentionally caught, then discarded. All of those effects threaten to wipe out the tasty aquatic morsels we're angling for in the first place. The carrot: Sustainable seafood (as in the Alaskan salmon), whether farmed or wild-caught, is abundant, well-managed and caught or farmed in environmentally sensitive ways. Tonight's Sustainable Seafood festival invites diners to dive into the waters of sustainable foods and ocean conservation from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Albuquerque Biological Park (2601 Central NW). Cost is $15 (no child/senior discounts) and includes plenty of guilt-free sea-goodies. For the festival, contact cabq.gov/biopark or 768-2000. Web-capable cell phone users: Log on to to mobile.seafoodwatch.org for the latest Monterey Bay Aquarium pocket guide to seafood. (LM)

Fri Aug 15: Anton Chekhov2
The word "humorous" might not be the first to come to mind when contemplating the works of Russian literary icon Anton Chekhov. But his works were, at times, meant to be just that. Starting this weekend, director Black Catherwood and his cast aim to show the lighter side of Chekhov with staged readings of eight short plays and monologues called Vaudevilles. It opens tonight at 8 p.m. at The Auxiliary Dog (3011 Monte Vista NE, 254-7716) and runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. through Aug. 30. Each night offers only four of the eight pieces, so attending both Friday and Saturday night's shows is recommended for your full Chekhov dosage. Admission is $5 each night. (AD)

Fri Aug 15: Follow the White Rabbit
Pulitzer Prize-winning Rabbit Hole has nothing to do with Alice or a White Rabbit and everything to do with debilitating loss and the power of human perseverance. Rabbit Hole, a play by David Lindsay-Abaire and directed by Leslee Richards, opens at the Adobe Theater (9813 Fourth Street NW) tonight at 8 p.m. and runs through Sept. 7 Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 students and seniors. For info and reservations, call 898-9222. (AD)

Sat Aug 16: Green Globally
In celebration of the 10 million species partying down on Earth, the Green Globe Festival brings a day of music and Earth-conscious speakery to Balloon Fiesta Park. Nosotros, The Big Spank and Ryan McGarvey, among others, will play a few chords, and members of New Mexico's environmentally conscious citizenry, including City Councilor Michael Cadigan, will speak their piece, as well. Tickets are $15 at the door, and $10 in advance at greenglobefestival.com. (SM)
