Rescue Me Mini-episodes
The Hilarity Continues In The FDNY On Rescue Me Minisodes!

Thu Oct 9: Scoring the Idea of America
Guitarist/composer Joel Harrison feels comfortably at home in a variety of styles--Americana, jazz, African traditional, classical, blues--as stunningly demonstrated by his release The Wheel (see Sonic Reducer in this week's Music section). In tonight's featured work, Vox Americana, Harrison's seven-piece ensemble gives voice to the idea of America, drawing on his broad musical palette; the responses of hundreds of Americans to the questions, Who are you? What does it mean to be an American? Where is our country headed?; and the astonishingly rich conversation between Harrison's brain and heart. At the Outpost Performance Space (210 Yale SE, 268-0044) at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17, $12 members. (MM)

Fri Oct 10: Corn, Everywhere
Who wouldn't want to get lost in a giant corn maze? This weekend, labyrinth junkies can hit both the Maze in the Maize and Wagner's Farm Corn Maze. The Maze in the Maize's Moonlight Maze happens tonight and tomorrow, Oct. 11, starting at 6 p.m. at Los Poblanos Fields Open Space (on MontaƱo, west of Fourth Street). Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children 4 to 12 and free for kids 4-and-under. Visit riograndefarm.org for info. The Wagner's Farm maze (6445 Corrales Road, Corrales) is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Oct. 31. Proceeds from Sunday, Oct. 12, will benefit Corrales MainStreet, an organization dedicated to preserving the historic and agricultural roots of Corrales. Tickets are $6.50 for adults and $4.50 for children under 12. Call 899-8578 for more info. If you get lost, you might have to shuck your way out. (SN)

Fri Oct 10: Hot Air, Hot Art
It's the last weekend of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta--have you gotten your fill of hot air? Visit balloonfiesta.com for a full schedule of events this weekend, including Park and Ride locations so you don't have to fight the incredibly crazy traffic. Or on your way, stop by the "big tent" just off the freeway at 1-25 and Paseo del Norte for the 20th annual Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival. The tent flaps open at 9 a.m. today, Saturday and Sunday and stay open until 5 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, while children 12-and-under get in free to see the work of 275 fine artists and craftspeople from all over the country. For more art fest info, visit riograndefestivals.com. (AD)

Fri Oct 10: Slam Dance
If that high school poetry class didn't get you dancing, then a frenzied five-hour rave will. Head over to ITZ (4595 San Mateo NW, next to Movies 8) for the Uncensored, Untamed and Unrated Poetry Rave. Participate in the open mic, money poetry slam, indoor rides, poetic auctions, unlimited buffet and free-metered dancing while supporting Albuquerque's many poetry nonprofits. The event starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person or $40 for three. Visit nmpoetrytangents.org for more info. (SN)

Sat Oct 11: Dear Home
During WWI, the War Department asked charities to help lift morale by creating postcards and donating other writing supplies so soldiers could pen letters to their friends and families. Today at 2 p.m., the New Mexico Postcard Club will examine these overlooked national keepsakes--postcards created to bolster spirits in wartime. The club meets in Botts Hall at the Special Collections Library (423 Central NE, 848-1376). (MD)

Sat Oct 11: From Field to Feast
Food and heritage--it's the anthropological equivalent to the chicken and the egg. None go back further around these parts than Native American and Hispanic cultures/cuisines, which are being toasted side-by-side during From Field to Feast. The monthlong festival explores the connections between farm, food and family through the lens of cultural identity (or is it vice-versa?) at both the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Drop in from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the NHCC (free) and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the IPCC (free with center admission) for chili cook-offs, kids' activities and more. Visit indianpueblo.org or nhccnm.org for details. (LM)
